If you’re a Product Manager, chances are you’ve asked yourself this question more than once: “Why am I in so many meetings?”
Here’s the truth - meetings won’t go away. But how you deal with them can change everything.
Cut the Waste Without Losing the Signal
🛑 Not every meeting deserves your time.
Start from your goals. Look at your calendar and ask: “Is this helping me move the product forward?” If the answer is “maybe,” that’s a no.
👀 Skim the notes instead of attending.
Sometimes, your presence adds no value. If you’re there just in case, request meeting notes instead. You can follow up later if needed.
📝 Push for documentation.
If it’s going to happen, make it count. Ask for notes with clear action items and deadlines. Don’t let meetings turn into vague chats.
🛠 Use tools that match your setup.
Whiteboards work great in a room. Remotely? Use Miro, FigJam, or similar. And if AI note-takers help reduce your load, use them.
🎯 Always ask: what’s the point of this?
Meetings need clear goals. If the conversation veers off, help steer it back. Don’t let 30 minutes become 90 with no outcome.
🚪 Leave early if it’s over.
There’s no award for sitting through filler. If the goal is met, wrap up. People will thank you.
🍕 Smaller meetings win.
Two-pizza rule applies. More people = more distraction. Invite only those who truly need to be there.
⏳ Plan for breaks.
If you’re going back-to-back, you’re burning out. Leave room between calls. Ten minutes of space can make a massive difference in focus.
Your time is your most limited asset. Guard it. Use it where it counts. Let meetings support your work - not eat it.
