Sprint 1 :: Path to product career
The bitter sweet smell of freshly roasted coffee beans fill the room ☕, it’s raining outside 🌧️, and the dawn of a new professional battle is arriving. The only problem is, we didn’t know it was coming!
The professional start of each of us was years before this morning, however, something was different today. We both entered the scented room to get our coffee, with no idea that we had a colleague with a desire to get to the same place as we wanted in the same room.
After a few months of speaking we figured out by chance that both of us wanted to start in the product area, this helped us as we had now someone to talk about what we wanted to reach.
One thing that helped us a lot was using business cases to think about how we would do things, of course we used the ones in our company to be easier, but this was a major breakthrough and helped us get in the right mindset for product management. We would discuss why this decision was made, or what way we could have gone, and each of those conversations helped us get to that ambiguous mindset. And so, without realizing it, in functions not related to the product, we were already applying methodologies and testing concepts that were completely new to us.
We did our courses, the CSPO, some udemy courses and heard a lot of podcasts trying to understand the product area and we kept going at it until we had our chance. Frederico had the first breakthrough becoming Product Owner at our “that time” company, and that helped us keep the conversations flowing about why or how something should be made.
In time Bruno also got his breakthrough in another company as a Product Owner and we started discussing more and more, and sharing more and more documents, books, information about how we made our decisions or how we organized our time. This helped us to have a broader view of what a product role is.
We had someone else with us at that time, following the same path, and that person will be here in the future. 🔜
No path to product is the same. As ambiguous a career as Product is, so is the path to it. Never the same, but with similar difficulties. Today, we are in different companies than the one where we met each other, both with product roles, increasingly curious and paying attention to everything that is new in this magical world - sometimes we look like wizards.
